Role overview
The Environmental Adviser will work as part of the Tanzania Local Enterprise Development (T-LED) project, jointly implemented by VSO Tanzania and CUSO International, which aims to increase the benefit to local communities in Tanzania of investment in the Extractives and Agriculture Sectors. The Environmental Adviser ‘s main role will be to carry out environmental assessments on targeted high potential value-chains, to determine potential impact from SME activities on the surrounding environment and to develop a mitigation strategy/tools, as well as a training plan for local SMEs, local partners and the project team in Lindi.
Skills, qualifications and experience
- A degree in environmental sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position (such as forestry, fisheries biology, wildlife ecology, environmental law, environmental science, biology, botany range management, geology, and other biological science courses).
- Experience in environmental management
Able to formulate and implement environmental regulations, policies and procedures.
Good experience in establishing and supporting organization development.
Facilitation and training skills
Strong understanding of businesses, esp. small and medium businesses
- Field experience or have actively participated in environmental projects, ideally international or
developmental
Passionate for sharing knowledge and implementing projects to help the environment
The Tanzania Local Enterprise Development (T-LED) project supports local SMEs to overcome existing barriers, with particular attention paid to the additional challenges faced by female-headed SMEs, in accessing growth markets in the extractive and agribusinesses sectors, while enhancing the quality and coordination of market- driven business development services. The project strives to bring together the private sector, civil society and government to encourage a more equitable and market-driven distribution of resources. The project not only seeks to reduce economic leakage and keep more of the value chain and income generation within Tanzania, but also to specifically ensure that more women and men may benefit from these growth markets. The project is implemented in Tanzania in four regions: Mwanza, Iringa, Lindi and Mtwara. The national project partners include key Tanzanian institutions mandated with building the country’s SME sector: the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (TCCIA), the Small Industry Development Organisation (SIDO), and the Tanzania Women Chamber of Commerce (TWCC).
