Child Protection/ Psychosocial Support Specialist
Child Safeguarding:

ROLE PURPOSE:
The Child Protection/ Psychosocial Support Specialist (CP/ PSS) will be
responsible for strengthening the quality of Save the Children’s child
protection and psychosocial support programme which form a key part of our
emergency response efforts and development programming, in Refugee Camps. The
PSS Specialist will train and mentor partner staff and volunteers/incentive
workers, lead on tool development, review our current activities, provide
technical advice, and may be asked to represent Save the Children at the
inter-agency Child protection and Psychosocial Support Working Group meetings
SCOPE OF ROLE:
This position reports to: Field manager.
The position is supported technically by the Child Protection
Manager/Coordinator
This is a challenging role in a complex environment. It requires a dedicated,

Participate to the coordination of the CP/PSS Working Group
In close collaboration with other actors:
Promote, respect and ensure that the Principles of Partnership are reflected in
the day-to-day work of the interagency coordination mechanisms
Participate to the Weekly CP Working Group Meeting at camp level.
Meet with and coordinate with key stakeholders and other agencies
working on PSS to identify strategic priorities and PSS needs within the
humanitarian response
Maintain results-oriented, two-way communication channels between
the national and other levels.
Disseminate tools and materials for PSS actors including
documented lessons learned and good practices for PSS
Identify capacity development needs amongst CP Working Group
members and co support capacity building initiatives led by the Working Group
Work with UNHCR and other PSS actors to ensure map PSS activities
to identify gaps and avoid duplication of efforts
Work to integrate and mainstream PSS in all services provided by
Babawatoto and Save the Children.
Review and development of Save the Children’s psychosocial
programme framework
Review of on-going psychosocial support activities (in Temporary Learning
Centers, CFSs and through community structures) to identify opportunities for
strengthening quality and meeting minimum standards.
Set up effective MEAL systems for psychosocial support activities
and quality markers.
If required, input into Save the Children’s strategic planning and
provide recommendations for future psychosocial programme development as part
of a holistic child protection programme, including identifying linkages with
other sectors
Capacity building
Conduct a training needs assessment with staff, partners, volunteers and
community workers and develop a capacity building plan based balancing needs
and proposal commitments.
Based on the capacity building plan, conduct core trainings for
staff, partners, volunteers and community workers on psychosocial support
Provide mentoring and ongoing on-the job training for key field
personnel.
Ensure field staff have and are familiar with accessible and
relevant reference tools and guidance documents
Lead the roll out of Psychological First Aid training across all
sectors
Ensure quality implementation of psychosocial support activities
In coordination with the CP and Education Coordinators, ensure delivery of psychosocial
support activities in schools, ECD centres and CFSs
Ensure standards for quality PSS programming in Child Friendly
Spaces and Temporary Learning Spaces in line with global standards, are put in
place and met
Provide support to the implementation, providing monitoring and
capacity building for child coping mechanism and using lessons learnt to
strengthen programme quality and scale up.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
A Psycho-social professional with an advance degree in child protection,
psychology, social work or relevant field, or equivalent management experience;
Significant experience in working in child protection in
emergencies, particularly on Child Friendly Spaces and Psychosocial programmes
Significant experience in capacity building and in strengthening
various duty bearers understanding of and response to Child Protection and
Psychosocial Support.
Experience in monitoring and evaluation of psychosocial
programmes, and feeding learning into programme design
Experience working on the inclusion of hard to reach groups of
children
Experience of working in refugee camp contexts
Cultural awareness and sensitivity
Demonstrates a high level of communication skills and fluency in
written and spoken English
Computer literate
Ability to communicate and maintain appropriate and productive
relations with a range of actors, including children, parents, local and
national authorities and other INGOs and UN agencies
Experience working with and strengthening PSS referral pathways
Self-awareness and proven ability to operate successfully in
different cultural environments
Commitment to the understanding of child rights, Save the
Children’s aims, values and principles and humanitarian standards as Sphere
Charter and Code of Conduct
Good knowledge of and experience in using established inter-agency
standards and guidelines in MHPSS and child protection, such as the IASC
Guidelines on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergency Settings, the
Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action, Inter-agency
Guidelines on Separated and Unaccompanied Children, the Paris Principles, MRM,
SC Child Friendly Spaces Handbook and IASC Guidelines in Emergencies.
Desired Criteria
Ability to speak and understand Kirundi, Swahili, and/or French
Experience with PSS in Education in Emergency/ Temporary Learning
programmes, particularly Accelerated Learning Programmes
Experience of SGBV programming in a refugee/IDP context
Experience strengthening child protection referral pathways.
Location: Kigoma region with frequent travel to refugee camps, Tanzania
